Once upon a time, in the mid-to-late 90s, owning a small computer (typically built on the micro-ATX format) was synonymous to owning a bottom-feeding piece of throwaway garbage with marginally more upgradability then the 386 sitting in your garage and a case infinitely more annoying to work in. While such machines succeeded well enough in the low-end garbage market, the mainstream and retail sectors both rejected them, as the trade-off for size included most of the power and flexibility that made computers useful.
