AVADirect Avant P870DM-G First Look

We’ve seen the Avant P870DM-G somewhere before (or at least something almost identical to it). AVADirect's interpretation of Clevo's shell is as close to the original as it gets, with an Intel Core i7-6700K and GeForce GTX 980 in a $2700 laptop. Over the past year, we saw a renewed interest in desktop replacement laptops, which were made more practical and powerful by Intel's sixth-generation Core (Skylake) host processors and Nvidia’s Maxwell-based GPUs. The announcement of the GeForce GTX 980 MXM module was met with skepticism, but the benchmarks we've run demonstrate that the mobile component packs as much performance as its desktop counterpart.
Companies like MSI and Asus offer desktop replacements of their own design. Other brands purchase a common laptop shell and outfit the internals with their choice of storage, memory, graphics, and more. One such barebones platform is Clevo's P870DM-G. AVADirect doesn’t even pretend to call it something else; the company maintains that model name with its Avant P870DM-G.

Best Computer Cases of 2016

You may have a monster graphics card, a sweet water-cooling setup, and multi-colored braided cables, but your rig's potential is wasted if they're crammed into a case that doesn't complement the hardware. What you need is a shiny new chassis, and we've gathered the best you can buy today.

Hands-on review: MSI WT72 6QN

Virtual reality is coming of age with hardware like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift providing ideal devices for creative minds and gamers alike. It doesn't come as a surprise therefore that at least one top-tier laptop vendor saw an opportunity to repackage its gaming products for a more lucrative audience: creative professionals. That vendor, MSI, sent us the WT72 6QN, otherwise known as the first Nvidia VR-ready professional mobile workstation, one which was launched only a few months ago. What sets it apart from its other siblings is the presence of a new GPU, the Quadro M5500, which has 2,048 CUDA cores and offers, according to Nvidia, a third more power compared to the previous generation. More on that later. So, this is a gaming laptop that has had a brain swap to transform it into a professional workstation – which means that there are still a lot of small features that betray its original status.Note that this laptop is not available for sale in the UK. The WT72 6QN costs a staggering $4,599 in the US and while you may be able to buy it from the States, the shipping costs and added taxes mean that you're looking at a £4,000 bill, at least (that's around AU$7,000).

How to Track Downloads in Google Drive, Dropbox, and Box

When it comes to tracking downloads in cloud storage services like  Dropbox, Google Drive, and Box, most of these services dont offer a straightforward or free way to know how many times your files are being downloaded. Using an analytics service like Google Analytics requires a pretty advanced understanding of coding and access to the backend of your site. So if youre looking for an easy, no-fuss way to figure out how many times your files are being downloaded, here are three options. 1. Use a URL Shortener When sharing the link to your file publicly, you can use an URL shortener...

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition 8GB Graphics Card Review

One of the things I’ve learned over the past 25 years is that the gaming industry never sleeps and that goes not only for game publishers and developers but also for all the hardware and peripherals manufacturers out there. So between all the VR devices currently released or being developed and the recent release of games like Tom Clancy’s The Division, DOOM, No Mans Sky and Mirrors Edge Catalyst and the upcoming release of titles like Star Citizen (Squadron 42), Battlefield 1, Watch Dogs 2, For Honor and Mass Effect Andromeda it only makes sense that gamers will soon (if they haven't not already) either turn towards the recently released GeForce GTX 1080/1070/1060 cards by NVIDIA or towards the Radeon RX480/470/460 models by AMD. Well it may have taken a while but on our test bench today we finally have the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition which we'll be comparing against a good number of other cards in the market.

NVIDIA is the world leader in visual computing. The GPU, our invention, serves as the visual cortex of modern computers and is at the heart of our products and services. Our work opens up new universes to explore, enables amazing creativity and discovery, and powers what were once science fiction inventions like artificial intelligence and autonomous cars. Beginning as a standard PC graphics chip company, NVIDIA has transformed into a specialized platform company that targets four very large markets — Gaming, Professional Visualization, Datacenter and Auto — where visual computing is essential and deeply valued. We are singularly focused on the field of visual computing with the ability to deliver our value through PC, mobile and cloud architectures. We are vertically integrated and bring together GPUs, system software, algorithms, systems and services to create unique value for the markets we serve.

The GeForce GTX 1080 graphics card is based on NVIDIA's brand new Pascal architecture (GP104 processor) which features a total of 2560 CUDA cores, 160 TMUs (texture mapping units), 64 ROPs (raster operations pipelines) and a 256bit memory interface along with a total of 8GB GDDR5X RAM by our friends over at Micron (memory is effectively clocked at 10GHz). In terms of software the new Pascal architecture supports many new and interesting technologies such as Fast Sync (eliminates frame-tearing), Boost 3.0 (increases and reduces clocks according to temperature levels), Simultaneous Multi-Projection (optimal surround-view output), Ansel (in-game snapshots), HDR (10/12-bit High-dynamic-range imaging) and Asynchronous Compute (ability to run graphics and compute workloads concurrently). The base clock for this NVIDIA reference card (the Founders Edition as NVIDIA has named it) is set at 1607MHz while the memory clock is set at 1251MHz (1733MHz boost clock). Unfortunately our sample took its time getting here (seems it had to make a few stops on the way) but it's here now so let's get down to business.

Reeven Ouranos RC-1401 Heatsink Review

A driving principle of being a hardware enthusiast is using your acquired knowledge to get the most from your system. That isn’t to say you need top of the line hardware or even color match your gear, the point is to have fun and build what you need.

In this review I’ll be looking at the Reeven Ouranos tower style heatsink. Reeven is a relatively new cooler and PC accessory company with a good variety of products to fit just about every type of system and cooling need. The Ouranos is a 140mm tower cooler that features a total of six heatpipes in a staggered array that loops from one end of the radiator to another.

Sapphire Radeon RX 460 and RX 470 graphics cards pictured

The RX 470 sample is said to be a 'Platinum Edition' card and boasts a white metal finish. At E3 earlier this summer AMD CEO, Lisa Su, announced two other graphics cards on the way to fill out the AMD RX 400 stable of mainstream graphics cards. The specs and release dates of these mass-market cards were not released at that time but we did learn that they would be called the RX 460 and the RX 470. More recently we saw some official basic specs shown off by AMD at an event in Australia, giving us a good idea of what to expect from these yet to be released Polaris graphics cards. Now GPU leak specialist VideoCardz has published pictures purporting to show Sapphire branded Radeon RX 460 and RX 470 graphics cards.

Silverstone Strider Platinum 750W ST75F-PT Overview and Pin-out Guide

SilverStone's strategy when it comes to power supply recently has been to squeeze as much power in a compact space as they can.
