ASRock X99 OC Formula Motherboard Review – Designed For Overclocking

In the past, overclocking has been seen as sort of “hacking” your hardware to run outside of the manufacturer’s specifications. This type of behavior would have been against the manufacturer’s wishes and likely void your warranty. However, today we live in a world of overclocking competitions and world records. Many of the very same companies that would have forbidden it in the past, now not only endorse it by sponsoring competitive teams, but design hardware tailored specifically to overclocking enthusiasts. This brings us to this report’s subject, the ASRock X99 OC Formula; a motherboard designed by top overclocker Nick Shih, who currently holds the world record for overclocking the Intel Core i7 5960X to a previously unheard of 6620.73 MHz, on this very motherboard.

Best AIO CPU Coolers of 2014

Well it’s that time of year again. The days are shorter, darker, and for many of us the ground has already turned white…again. And so as the year comes to a close we start to take stock of what the previous year has brought us. We remember the good times that were had and maybe the bad. Perhaps it’s an attempt to add value to the time lost, to reassure ourselves that we did indeed use our time well. Certainly one of the most interesting aspects of this time of year is the inevitable posting of lists! All the listing and ordering of events, items, and achievements must bring the writer a sense of closure and completeness, but really who cares we just love reading these lists! Not wanting to leave you feeling short handed, ThinkComputers is excited to bring you our own twist on the yearly list. It was just a few years ago that the all in one liquid cooling solution really hit the market, but in that short time the AIO has now become a must have for the serious computerenthusiast. This past year ThinkComputers has reviewed many of them for you, some good, some not so great. Bringing the year to a close, we would like to present to you 2014’s best AIO coolers as reviewed by ThinkComputers.

Best High-End Laptops: Holiday 2014

High-End Laptop Recommendations

Our holiday guides have covered a lot of products so far, and just on the laptop side of things weve looked at budget laptops, Chromebooks, and mainstream offerings – and lets not forget the related Tablets guide, which overlaps with hybrid devices. Today, we wrap up our laptop coverage with the final catch-all category: "high-end" laptops. High-end means different things to different people, and with a price range of $1500 to $3000+ (you can spend more, but well try to keep things at least somewhat reasonable) there are a ton of options.

The birds eye overview is that most people spending this much money on a laptop want a top quality device that also offers excellent performance, and it should have a display and build quality to match. Even with those constraints, however, theres still some wiggle room, and there are frankly a lot of potential options. I cant hope to cover every single one, but if youre wondering what I think are the best laptops of the past year or so, this is my current "Whos Who" list.

Catalyst Omega - A Closer Look

AMD’s Catalyst driver package has been a mainstay of their graphics program since the good old days of ATI. Through the years it has seen the incorporation of new proprietary technologies – including CrossFire, Eyefinity and most recently Mantle – as well as continual gradual improvements which result in better stability and performance. However in the past week it has briefly broken from its incremental naming scheme to issue a new baseline – the Catalyst Omega Special Edition drivers.

Chock full of new features for the home and gamers, Catalyst Omega will be a new milestone for performance and from which new AMD Catalyst revision are released. Furthermore it incorporates the technologies which could be critically important in the coming months, allowing AMD a head start before new hardware announcements at CES2015.

Epson WorkForce WF-2660 Review

After debuting Epson's new PrecisionCore printhead technology in the popular WorkForce WF-3640, the company is bringing the same laser-like print quality to the affordable yet feature-rich WF-2660 ($149.99 /£96/AU$183) for small business. The WF-2660 is more suitable for an office that doesn't print many pages or photos per month, but want the convenience of a printer, scanner, copier and even fax machine in a single unit that you can connect to wirelessly - whether it is through USB, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, cloud-based services or even NFC (Near Field Communication). This means you can print or scan from any computer or mobile device to this machine, with a maximum print resolution of 4800x2400 dpi, and a scan resolution of 1200x2400 dpi. Its 30-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) and auto-duplex (double-sided) feature make it indispensable in a busy office. At just 14.6 lb (6.6 kg) and measuring 16.7 x 22 x 9.1 (424mm x 559mm x 231mm), the WF-2660 is tiny compared to its closest rivals, the all-round bigger Canon Pixma MG7520 ($129.99/£83/AU$158) and HP Envy 7640 ($140/£89/AU$173). That said, if your business is all about printing gorgeous photos, the Canon - with its six-ink-tank design and direct media access - is a no-brainer. If you aren't picky about the quality of your prints but want the connectivity of the Epson, the HP would be the way to go as it only uses two cartridges (one for blacks and one for all colors) and will be more economical to operate in the long run.

Guardian Angel Safety Outlet Review

Children love to get into things and mess around with items that they are not supposed to. It's human nature to explore everything we set our eyes on and this unfortunately includes electrical outlets. Ever year there are about 3,900 emergency room visits and around 100 deaths revolving around power outlets. This is where a new product called the Guardian Angel Safety Outlet comes in. The Guardian Angel Outlet is an electric outlet that provides what is said to be absolute safety along with the convenience one expects from a normal outlet.

Holiday Guides 2014: Monitors

With the holidays here, it’s time to look back on the monitors I’ve seen in the past year and determine what really stands out. This year has seen the availability of 4K displays rise while the price has fallen dramatically. Where the first 4K display we reviewed cost over $3,000, now I see a 4K monitor at Costco for under $600 when I go shopping, or you can even find them for $400 at Monoprice.

This rapid rise in availability of panels has not been without issues, as DisplayPort and HDMI hardware are still playing catch-up, while Windows continues to lag with DPI scaling. With these two issues, my advice on 4K remains to wait until you can buy a display with HDMI 2.0 and/or DisplayPort 1.3 chipsets so you are not stuck using MST and other work arounds to drive them past 30Hz. This also gives software vendors more time to bring their software up to speed with HiDPI resolutions and scaling inside of OS X and Windows.

My recommendations for displays focus on general use and not on gaming or professionals. This next year will see more gaming display reviews coming, so people after those will be happy to see more reviews in that area soon.

I would say the 'O' stands for "oversized window," as one of the key aspects of the series are the oversized tempered glass windows that combined with Lian Li's renowned aluminum construction and PCI riser cards make them perfect for showing off your machine's guts.
