AMD Ryzen 5 1500X CPU Review

AMD's Ryzen 5 1500X challenges the Intel Core i5 family for quad-core supremacy. Can Ryzen overtake the latest Kaby Lake-based models in the $200 range? AMD’s Ryzen 7 derives its value from higher performance than Intel's workstation-oriented Broadwell-E processors at any given price price point. With Ryzen 5, the company plays to the same tune, this time hitting comparable prices as Intel's Core i5 chips, but with simultaneous multi-threading to turn four or six cores into 8T/12T powerhouses.

The six-core Ryzen 5 1600X we recently tested is one such 6C/12T solution, going up against 4C/4T Core i5s and successfully cutting through threaded workloads with greater alacrity. The Ryzen 5 1500X we're benchmarking today loses two cores, but maintains its SMT support to tackle the mainstream competition without compromising performance in rendering, programming, and transcoding apps.

AMD takes CPU market share from Intel, thanks to Ryzen

The latest quarterly market share report from PassMark, which is based on thousands of submissions that enter their database every quarter, AMD is making strides in CPU market share - even though it's a small uptick, it's a valuable one. You can see that the uptick is pretty large considering the slowly dwindling numbers from 2006, where AMD didn't really have anything worthwhile for consumers to buy in the CPU business.

Aorus AX370 Gaming 5 Motherboard Review

For the past several years Intel has been at the forefront of PC performance when they launched the 2600K Sandy Bridge CPU. During this time AMD, their largest competitor, had refocused their efforts on building power efficient APU style processors which worked extremely well in small form factor machines. These didn't have the same power when it came to gaming and high-end computing as their FX line of CPUs was supposed to fill that gap. While they did have eight cores and overclocked quite well they ran extremely hot and still couldn’t match the performance of the Intel LGA 115x.

Strangely enough while AMD had been absent from the performance PC space Intel didn’t do much to increase performance either opting instead to include new and emerging features that much of the enthusiast sector largely ignored. Their latest iteration, Skylake and Kaby Lake, feature DDR4 memory, come with HyperThreading and 20 lanes of PCI Express making them virtually identical to the old Sandy Bridge with negligible performance gains largely due to an absence of competition.

Corsair's One Pro small-form-factor gaming PC reviewed

Corsair's One Pro promises full-fat desktop performance from a system much smaller than most off-the-rack Mini-ITX PCs. We turned up the heat on the One Pro to see whether Corsair's liquid-cooling know-how can really shrink full-size desktop performance into a 13-liter package.

Dome Mouser DMMZ1 Z-Wave Plus Smart Rodent Trap Review

The product up for consideration takes our interest in home automation in a whole new direction! The Dome Mouser DMMZ1 Z-Wave Plus smart rodent trap may be one of the most interesting applications of Z-Wave technology that I have seen. The Mouser has a cat inspired design, as well as a cat inspired purpose. The housing conceals a battery powered electrocution system, as well as a Z-Wave radio to let you know when it has "taken care of" a rodent!

EpicGear DeFiant Mechanical Keyboard Review

While EpicGear might not be the first name you think of when it comes to high-end peripheral manufacturers, the company are hoping their DeFiant keyboard will help put them on the map. The standout feature of the DeFiant is the ability to change the mechanical switches on a per-key basis, an idea that I think is deserving of more attention.

Gnome 3 + Dash to Panel extension - Turbo efficiency

I've written a short article and tutorial introducing Dash to Panel, a Gnome Shell extension that provides panel-like dock behavior instead of the default Activities and overview functionality, including a slightly non-trivial setup, look & feel, features, comparison to Dash to Dock, small problems, and more. Enjoy.

HyperX Pulsefire FPS Gaming Mouse Review

It’s time again for us to take a look at a gaming mouse and this time it’s a first for a well-known company that’s been around a long time. That would be Kingston under their HyperX brand which encompasses their lineup of enthusiast gamer products. The HyperX Pulsefire FPS Gaming Mouse made an appearance at CES but until now we haven’t had the opportunity to see how their foray into the gaming mouse segment will pan out. The HyperX brand has been around since around 2002, so it’s somewhat amazing they haven’t put one out until now. Adding a gaming mouse was inevitable as it rounds out their existing gaming peripheral offerings such as keyboards, headsets and mouse pads. This is in addition to their more seasoned flash and memory products that have been core to their business for a long time. We’ve even heard that they there may be a gaming chair in the works but for today we’ll focus on the Pulsefire FPS mouse.

Intel patches nine-year-old enterprise CPU vulnerability

Remote management vulnerability has been exploitable since the dawn of Core. Intel has just patched a vulnerability which has been open and exploitable in all its enterprise targeted Core processors - for the last nine years. Since 2008 Intel's business-focussed PC processors have shipped with Active Management Technology (AMT), Intel Standard Manageability (ISM) and Small Business Technology (SBT) features - all useful features for remote management. However, these powerful features could be accessed by anyone with a copy of Metasploit on the same network, or from anywhere in the world if port 16992 was left accessible.
