Received the follow messages:
1) The NT 4.0 drivers will work only with the parallel version. To get
the USB version working, install the printer as a DeskJet 970Cse. This
allows USB printing but limits you to 600dpi
2) HP now announce that a driver with full capability will NOT now be
available until September... presumably they mean this year! Previously
they had announced that a driver would be available in the spring.

OS does not have a native driver nor does the vendor. Web site site does not say specifically if this will even be supported. Tried everything from installing in compatibility mode to installing manually via temp files.

HP now says there will be NO DRIVER for Window VISTA. That is such a shame. I buy a lot of HP products because of their support and upgradability. I am really disappointed they would choose not to at least make a basic drive for this printer as it is a great printer.

WORKS!

acting on a tip i found online i installed my p1100 as a HP DESKJET 1120C using add new printer in WINDOWS VISTA home premium.

i printed a test page and bam it works. it seems to print websites off alright as well as text documents, as far as the great photo pics i used to get, there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference.

all i know is that this works cause the brainbox, processer or chipset whatever is inside the printer that makes the printer work is supposed to be the same hardware, the only difference is the deskjet doesn't have the card, reader i dunno.

at least i can print now, and if your like me and can't afford a new printer this will work just fine for you too.

The HP PSC 500 driver seems to work for the Photosmart 1100 as well.

Downloaded the HP Driver for XP and it wouldn't recognize the printer. On a whim I tried the DeskJet 1100C. Prints beautifully. Have yet to fully test color, but like many others I have no desire to fork over money on a new printer when I have a sound one already available.

Installing as PSC 500 through USB virtual port did not work for me nor Deskjet 1120C I wonder if the others used parallel or other. This laptop is limited to USB.

Got the printer working with the USB cable using the HP DeskJet 930C drivers.

Came across an article on the Internet saying they'd work.

Didn't use the found new hardware wizard.

Printer was switched on and USB cable connected before I did anything.

Manually Added the printer (Control Panel/Printers)

Then followed the prompts.
Add a local printer
Use an existing port - selected USB001
Then selected HP DeskJet 930C

Printed fine. The only problem I've found so far is with double sided printing. Could be a problem with the printer itself though-caused a couple of jams trying it.

The Deskjet 1220C driver works fine, added it manually thru Control Panel, Printers, Add a Printer, Add a Local Printer, Use an Existing Port. Computer has 3 USB ports listed, added the driver and ran a test page for each port until, wouldn't ya know, the last port USB003 fired up the printer. Thanks for all postings.

I tried all three printer mimics for my HP Photosmart P1100. The drivers for the HP Deskjet 1220C clearly work best. The drivers for the HP Deskjet 970Cse and the HP PSC 500 did not handle colors correctly for me, although they print B&W just fine.

Installed as Deskjet 1120C as above. I am using a Netgear PS101 print server to access the printer via TCP/IP. Used simple manual configuration via instructions provided at the Netgear site; system thinks the printer is at LPT1. I'll report back if any anomalies occur.
