In this article, Benchmark Reviews tests the EVGA GeForce GTX 660 2GB SC (model 02G-P4-2662-KR) against a collection of DirectX 11 discrete graphics solutions.

Last month, Nvidia shook up the enthusiast GPU market by launching its most affordable Kepler offering yet. At $299, the GK104-based GeForce GTX 660 Ti was $100 cheaper than the GTX 670, while being just 13% slower. Likewise, the GTX 660 Ti was 11% faster and more power efficient than the competing Radeon HD 7870 when testing at 1920x1200 on most games, despite matching it on price.

In the past few months, we have taken a look at no less than four new high-end GPUs from NVIDIA based on the company's Kepler microarchitecture. NVIDIA kicked things off with the GeForce GTX 680 back in May and followed up a few weeks later with the monstrous, dual-GPU powered GeForce GTX 690, which remains the fastest graphics card in existence. A few days after that, the GeForce GTX 670 hit the scene and last month marked the arrival of the GeForce GTX 660 Ti. While all of these GeForce GTX 600 series cards differ in their delivered performance levels, they do have something major in common--they are all based on the same GK104 GPU.

It has only been a few weeks since the launch of the GTX 660 Ti but again NVIDIA are ready with a new card, two in fact, the GTX 650 and GTX 660. We have two new graphics cards in the lab today: Nvidia's GeForce GTX 650 and 660, filling the gap between its GeForce GT 640 and GTX 660 Ti with Kepler derivatives. Are these GK107- and GK106-based boards able to challenge the Radeon HD 7750 and 7850?

It's been nearly 6 months since the launch of the first Kepler GPUs, and due to 28nm production difficulties NVIDIA has spent the last 6 months with a sizable hole in their video card lineup between their high-end and budget cards. Since the launch of the GTX 680 in March, NVIDIA has launched the GTX 670 and much more recently the GTX 660 Ti to help close that gap, but they have still been in need of a true midrange GPU for mainstream cards. Today that hole is filling being filled, as NVIDIA is ready to launch the 3rd and final consumer Kepler GPU for the year. With GK104 at the high-end and GK107 at the low-end, the task of filling out the middle will fall to NVIDIAs latest GPU: GK106. As given away by the model number, GK106 is designed to fit in between GK104 and GK107. GK106 offers a more modest collection of functional blocks in exchange for a smaller die size and lower power consumption, making it a perfect fit for NVIDIAs mainstream desktop products. GK106s launch vehicle will be the GeForce GTX 660, the central member of NVIDIAs mainstream video card lineup. GTX 660 is designed to come in between GTX 660 Ti and GTX 650 (also launching today), bringing Kepler and its improved performance down to the same $230 price range that the GTX 460 launched at nearly two years ago. NVIDIA has had a tremendous amount of success with the GTX 560 and GTX 460 families, so theyre looking to maintain this momentum with the GTX 660.
