odd problem.

Hello, My problem is that my computer in a way will up and freeze but will not shut off. More how a dying Power Supply would do; but when this happens nothing really shuts off, just freezes constantly until i manually restart it.

Hello,
My problem is that my computer in a way will [lag] up and freeze but will not shut off. More how a dying Power Supply would do; but when this happens nothing really shuts off, just freezes constantly until i manually restart it. I cannot stop this and have to turn it off or restart to be able to use my computer. It does this every so often. I have reformated my computer. And to my dismay it still continues to do this. I'm thinking it may be a hardware issue [mainly with either my Power Supply/CPU Fan/Processor]. I am not sure which because I have not been able to test them. It happens after my computer has been on for a certain amount of time or just resting on the desktop. If anyone has had this as an issue or knows of a sollution, please help! this is REALLYannoying.

Thank you.

[edit]I have just noticed that, when i connect to MSN messenger it seems to do this more often. I'm thinking it may be a networking issue but than again i have just very recently reformatted my computer so... help? ;(

You really need to give us some more specifics. Motherboard, CPU, amount of memory, size of hard drive and percentage of it is used, which Windows OS your are using, video card and drivers, Anti-virus program, etc.

I am very new to Linux of any flavor, but I was having freeze issues as well, and found that if I unplugged any USB devices or, disabled USB in the BIOS of my motherboard the freeze problems went away.

I had experienced the problem on many flavors of Linux including XandrOS, Mandrake 10.1, Mandriva 2005, Fedora Core 4 before by chance I had found the problem disappear when I unplugged my USB webcam from the machine I was runnin Linux on, since then I am still trying to decide which distro I want to use, so far I like them all 0o. But if you have any USB devices, you may want to try unplugging them, if you do not have any but have USB enabled, try disabling it in the BIOS and see if the problem still exists.
