be quiet! Shadow Rock LP Cooler Review

When does low equate to high? How about when companies like be quiet! extend its cooler lineup with a new low profile, but potentially high performance CPU cooler. One of the market leaders in Germany for over nine consecutive years, be quiet! introduced to the Shadow Rock LP for HTPC and other small form factor computers earlier this April.

The Shadow Rock LP has 4 heat pipes each with a 6 millimeter diameter and uses aluminum fins in a double stack setup that varies in width from 18 to 30 millimeters depending on location on the cooler. The top of the aluminum fins end with a brushed aluminum plate and caps to cover the heat pipes, with the be quiet! name in raised/polished lettering onto this top plate.

Providing air flow is the included Pure Wings 2 120mm PWM controlled fan. Rated at 25.5 dB(A) maximum noise level at 100% fan speed, the Pure Wings 2 uses nine fan blades to move 51.4 CFM of air. Using wire clips, the fan can be mounted in a push (toward the CPU) or pull (upward toward the case cover panel) setup depending on your preferences or case requirements.

BenQ RL2755HM Review

The BenQ RL2755HM is a 27-inch gaming display with a TN panel and a 1ms G2G (grey-to-grey) response time. BenQ talks up its gaming credentials for both PC and consoles, thanks to its dual HDMI ports and a few ergonomic tricks such as an extendable headphone rest and a stand that’s shaped for gripping joypads. With a price that’s reasonable and competitive with other 27-inch screens, the RL2755HM is certainly worth a look if you’re after an affordable gaming display.

eDRAM Overclocking on the Intel Core i7-5775C Broadwell CPU

When we reviewed the Intel Core i7-5775C 'Broadwell' processor with Intel Iris Pro 6200 graphics we completed the review with the 128MB of eDRAM locked at 1800MHz. After the review was posted our friends at ASUS gave us the opportunity to try out a new beta UEFI revision that has the option of changing the eDRAM ratio! Intel allowed the eDRAM ratio to be unlocked on the Intel Core i7-5775C and Core i5-5675C processors for...

EVGA GTX 980 Ti Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+ Review

The GTX 980 Ti caught many by surprise. Its launch may have been a foregone conclusion since it follows NVIDIA’s cyclical naming conventions but very few expected it to match blows with the TITAN X while boasting a price of $649. Naturally, board partners are trying to capitalize upon the resulting popularity and today’s review highlights one that will likely make its way into many enthusiasts’ systems: the EVGA GTX 980 Ti Superclocked+ ACX 2.0+. Yeah, it’s a mouthful but once you see what this card can do, it could be called Purple Unicorn Bunny yet still sell like hotcakes.

With the GTX 980 Ti being such a hot commodity, one would think that NVIDIA’s board partners would have a wide variety of overclocked, custom cooled solutions ready to go. That isn’t happening quite yet and EVGA has thus far been one of the only non-reference options here in North America. Things may change now that AMD”s Fury X has launched. Another possibility is that NVIDIA effectively moved forward their launch date in an effort to preempt Fiji so most alternate designs just weren’t ready in time. With that being said, this is our first of many reviews of custom GTX 980 Ti’s as they begin tricking into the market.

QNAP TVS-871U-RP-i3-4G NAS Server Review

Roughly 5 months ago i had the opportunity to visit one of the largest data centers in the world (located inside the EU) and needless to say the moment i stepped in their quite massive installation i was overwhelmed not only by their amount of servers and drive arrays (actually they use HDDs, SSDs and flash drives) but also by their local data transfer speeds (40GbE anyone?) and extreme cooling methods (did you know that they even use warm water for cooling?). Anyways when i got back to our "lab" (can hardly even call it that after experiencing what i did) i decided to perform several upgrades the first of which had to do with our NAS testing methodology since 1GbE has been maxed out for years now. Well the next "obvious" step was for us to implement 10GbE testing (40GbE is the next step, don't know the when however) and a couple of weeks ago we finished "gathering" all the necessary components. Having the hardware however is not enough so the very first NAS server to make use of that is the brand new TVS-871U-RP-i3-4G by our very good friends over at QNAP.

QNAP Systems, Inc., as its brand promise "Quality Network Appliance Provider", aims to deliver comprehensive offerings of cutting edge network attached storage (NAS) and network video recorder (NVR) solutions featured with ease-of-use, robust operation, large storage capacity, and trustworthy reliability. QNAP integrates technologies and designs to bring forth quality products that effectively improve business efficiency on file sharing, virtualization applications, storage management and surveillance in the business environments, as well as enrich entertainment life for home users with the offering of a fun multimedia center experience. Headquartered in Taipei, QNAP delivers its solutions to the global market with nonstop innovation and passion.

When we got the TurboNAS TS-469U-RP from QNAP roughly 4 years ago it was our first real encounter with a rack mount NAS server (one which we could actually test) and largely thanks to its excellent performance, height (wide and long but quite thin) and dual power supply units (redundant power supply feature) it earned a permanent place in our lab ever since. That however was then and so the brand new TVS-871U-RP-i3-4G is much more advanced compared to the TS-469U-RP in more areas than even we would expect. So this time over under the hood we see a powerful dual-core Intel Core i3-4150 processor running at 3.5GHz, 4GB DDR3 RAM running at 1600MHz (four slots expandable to 32GB), 512MB flash DOM and two mSATA ports for read cashing (for use with mSATA SSDs). We also have 8 SATA III hot-swappable bays, 4 USB 3.0 ports, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 4 Gigabit RJ-45 Ethernet ports, two PCIe expansion slots (x8/x4) and of course two switching power supplies (250W each). QNAP also makes the TVS-871U-RP available in two more flavors one with a slightly less powerful dual-core Intel Pentium G3250 processor running at 3.1GHz and one with a more powerful quad-core Intel Core i5-4590S processor running at 3GHz and with 8GB of DDR3 RAM right out of the box.

Razer Firefly Review

The humble mouse mat or pad is a fairly overlooked yet important piece of equipment for the PC gamer. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes and a variety of materials, it becomes difficult to foresee how the mouse mat will evolve. As gaming mice push the boundaries of performance, as seen with the Razer Mamba and its high precision 16,000 DPI sensor, materials used to create the mat are ever moving towards a microscopic design detail and this can be seen with the continual innovations from ROCCAT, SteelSeries and Razer.

The Razer Firefly comes in to complete the Chroma setup, through the Razer synapse software you can sync the colour and glow to your other Chroma enabled devices and through the Chroma SDK, developers can also create lighting effects to enhance in game actions and immersion. Coming in at quite a high price for 'just a mouse mat' this will undoubtedly draw attention for any enthusiasts looking to light up their desk.

Silverstone Tundra TD02-E & TD03-E Review

In 2013 Silverstone released their first ever All In One CPU Cooling solutions - the Tundra TD02 and TD03 - and helped redefine how closed loop water coolers should be designed. Before these two products major AIO manufactures all used folded fin based radiators and never really put a high priority on the overall aesthetics of their wares. Then Silverstone released their high-performance, awesome looking Tundra series and pretty much changed everything.

Now Silverstone is hoping to change things yet again with the TD02-E and TD03-E CPU, successors to those highly popular original coolers. With these two revisions, they hope to remove the one area in which the Tundra AIO's were arguably inferior to the competition: size. Put concisely, both the TD02 and TD03 may have been excellent looking and outperformed their competition but their rather thick dimensions caused some installation challenges. Much like Corsair's H80 series, using a thick radiator meant their AIOs simply would not fit into some cases but the so-called “E-series” is about to change all of that.
